#7 Are there limits with my patient’s PIP coverage as to the type and number of Medical Providers my patients can see?
QUESTION: Are there limits with my patient’s PIP coverage as to the type and number of Medical Providers my patients can see?
ANSWER: When your patient has been injured in a car accident, they have advantages when using the PIP policy benefits they don’t generally receive with their regular health insurance coverage. There are no designated medical provider networks and they’re allowed to see the healthcare professional of their choice. They don’t need a referral to see a specialist and they’re permitted to see the type of medical provider they want to see. They may also see multiple different types of healthcare professionals to help in the recovery of their injuries from their accident.
The great news about PIP is that it actually has advantages over health insurance policies. Many health insurance policies require your patient to see providers inside their MCO. Or if they’re Kaiser, generally speaking, they can only see the providers within the Kaiser system.
Oftentimes, health insurance requires there be a referral from their primary provider. That is simply not the case with PIP. Your patient can see whatever licensed medical provider they want- part of the problem is your patients often don’t know this.
PIP is essentially a health insurance policy with very few limitations or hoops they experience with health insurance.
